Public Health issues affecting our aging population…

Hundreds of thousands of elderly people are lonely and feel cut off from society in this country. According to Age UK, more than 2 million people in England over the age of 75 live alone, and more than a million older people say they go for over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour or family member. This has only increased since the pandemic. Older people are especially vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation – and it can have a serious effect on physical health and mental well-being. Malnutrition (undernutrition) is characterised by low body weight or weight loss, which simply means that some older people are not eating well enough to maintain their health and well- being. Malnutrition is a chronic issue in the UK. It is estimated that around one in ten people over the age of 65 are malnourished or are at risk of malnutrition – that is over one million older people in the UK today. Malnutrition is both a cause and a consequence of physical and mental health difficulties and is a silent and hidden problem which costs the NHS approximately £10 billion per year through increased need for hospital admissions, long-term health problems and longer recovery times from illness.

Facts and Figures

Malnutrition is a significant, and neglected, public health problem. It affects over 10% of people over the age of 65

Malnutrition costs more than £19.6 billion per year to the NHS, and over half of these costs are expended on the elderly

The causes of malnutrition are both social and clinical: they include underlying disease, decreased mobility, limited transport to local shops, social isolation and poverty

Malnutrition is an important marker for inequalities in health, social care and housing, between regions and within localities

Fresh not Frozen!

Due to changes in family lifestyle, there is a current demand for food that is easy to prepare. Many families use frozen foods as it is a quick and easy way of providing a meal. However, research tells us that substantial losses of sensitive vitamins are lost during each of the chilling, storage and reheating stages. When food is reheated after storage for 24 hours, losses of essential vitamins can be greater than 30%.

Nancy’s Larder uses fresh ingredients each day and delivers food hot so there is no need to reheat our food. This maximizes the nutritional value of our food and ensures that our customers are eating a safe, hot and nutritious meal.
